World Cheese Awards Names Swiss Gruyere Best of 2022
On November 2nd, the international dairy community held their version of the Olympics, the 2022 World Cheese Awards. More than 250 judges nibbled their way through over 4,000 cheeses - submitted from 42 countries - to decide which should be named the best cheese on the planet.
After tasting the thousands of entrants (talk about a cheese high!), Le Gruyère AOP Surchoix was chosen to take home the crown of World Champion Cheese.Produced by Swiss cheesemaker Vorderfultigen and by refiner Gourmino, this mature gruyère made from raw cow's is full-bodied with a slightly crumbly texture. Judges remarked on how it practically melts on your tongue and conveys the perfectly balanced notes of herbs, fruits, and leather. It was described as a "really refined, hand-crafted cheese" worthy of the highest accolade as this year’s world champion cheese.
Other notable wins included one for past World Champion Cheese winner, Rogue River from Oregon. The America creamery won for the first time in 2019 and this year won honored with the Super Gold accolade. In total, USA came home with 133 winners, including 4 Super Gold, 15 Gold, 40 Silver and 74 Bronze awards.
